Upgrade Advantage Datapoint

This was the first time I’ve bid on an upgrade so I wanted to provide a post with my experience as a datapoint for future cruisers. I wanted a last minute long weekend getaway so booked an interior cabin on the Gem leaving on the 7th out of Miami. There were ocean views available, but they were about 300 per person more than the interior, and since it was just me and the Mrs. It would fit the bill, so we booked the interior.

About a week after we booked we got the upgrade email, so we bid 90.00 per person for the oceanview, which was in the red for bid strength, but we didn’t really care if we got it. Got the email about a week before sailing that we won the bid and the new cabin number. When we got on the ship, needed to go to guest services for something unrelated and they had the sign up that it was a full ship and they couldn’t accommodate any cabin changes. Our cabin is in what come could consider undesirable front of the ship, but we don’t mind the motion.

Moral of the story is just throw a bid out there if it’s something you are comfortable spending and if it works out, great, if not, that’s ok too. Don’t let the bid strength influence your decision unless you are shooting for something like Heaven.

Happy cruising!
