Are NITs actually good?

The coaching institutes in India massively hype up all universities accepting JEE because they want ranks, but that makes me question: Are NITs really that good? Or do they get all the hype cuz of 'JEE' and being the 2nd best to elite IITs? How do top NITs like Calicut, Rourkela, Warangal compare with top universities in countries like Australia and Canada? Do people outside India, really even know that NITs exist?
